How to Counter Bad Press

Illustrated by this wonderfully satirical piece by a writer from the Onion news source, Wal-Mart has "employed" some of the most simplistic yet powerful tactics for countering bad press. Here are some more realistic ideas (with their pro's and cons) for getting the press and angry customers off your back.

  • Give in and let it bring your company to a new stage
    • Pro: Gives you a great opportunity to revamp
    • Con: Kind of a big stretch to imagine this will actually happen and help
  • Point out some of your product's highlights to the press and public
    • Pro: Gets people thinking about the other side
    • Con: Not very convincing since the glass is most often half empty in the American mind
  • Increase your marketing
    • Pro: Customer realizes you aren't going to give up that easily!
    • Con: Somewhat expensive
  • Sing the remodeling song
    • Pro: Regains customer trust
    • Con: Takes a long time to come up with something new
  • Blogging
    • Pro: Easy, cheap, very accessible
    • Con: There are a lot of other blogs out there just as easily accessible as yours
  • Bury it
    • Pro: Easily erasable
    • Con: Never a good idea to cover up
So... pick your poison and good luck.
