The Spin Doctor Is In...
Breathing Down the President's Neck
After President Obama's memorable moment on 60 Minutes (he laughed in the interview with Steve Kroft after the question "are you punch drunk") PR people were all over it, analyzing why he laughed and if he should have and if indeed he actually was drunk. I immediately thought of the dramatic Tom Cruise incident after I read this.
Here are some of the "professional's" views.
"The interview was nearly 30 minutes long and the 'punch drunk' segment lasted about 30 seconds, I think it's ridiculous that 30 seconds would come to define an entire interview. That said, in modern public relations those 30 seconds can be the most important if the 'pack' of journalists inside the Beltway focus on them, since most Americans will only watch the reviews of the interview and not the interview itself."- Rich Masters
"We don't need a comic-in-chief we need a commander-in-chief!"- Marina Ein
"Yes, the laughter was off key but it's a great example of how seductive the press can be and how easy it is for even the most polished speakers to let their guard down."- Jim McCarthy
"While Obama is gifted in so many ways, humor is not of them"- Unnamed PR Specialist
And this is what I think: Dearest President, do whatever you want. It's your way of disarming the situation. Laugh when you want to laugh, cry when you want to cry, if people are analyzing you/breathing down your neck this much, I would be emotional too.

"Publicity is the life of this culture - in so far as without publicity capitalism could not survive - and at the same time publicity is its dream." -John Berger
