The Spin Doctor Is In...
Bankrupt? Tell the Media!!!
Smart move from The Philadelphia Inquirer on February 22 2009. Splayed right on the front page in big bold: "Inquirer filing for bankruptcy." The article goes on to say that Philadelphia Newspapers L.L.C (owning such newspapers as The Inquirer) has filed for bankruptcy and asked for $390 million to restructure.
This (though seemingly detrimental to a company) is a great move because:
1- The company didn't hide information that would somehow get out no matter how well they hid it
2- Now the public doesn't find out information from some other source who might skew the facts. (Also taking the shock out of the story)
3- They have a quote to reassure by the chief officer, "Our operations are sound and profitable," said Tierney
4- Helps gain support from local customers
